Cannabis Compliance: Getting You Through The Weeds (Part 3 of 3)

Missed Part Two?   Advice on Cannabis Compliance To stay in full compliance you need to make sure you stay diligent in your efforts of keeping everything on track, together, and up-to-date. A word of advice: don’t let yourself get stuck in a rut or get bogged down. It is a process and you just have to stick with it. You will have good days and bad days when it comes to compliance. As a compliance manager, your mission should not be just knowing the compliance rules but making sure your staff is implementing and abiding by these rules. The easiest way to accomplish this is to get your team to buy into a “compliance first” mentality. Sure it is easier to take shortcuts but this is the quickest way to find yourself with compliance problems. You will have the most success when your employees see compliance as a must have value versus a tedious task. This all starts with your company’s dedication and commitment to the compliance process and the attitude you as the compliance manager instill in your team. The more your team buys into the need for compliance the easier your job as the compliance manager will be as compliance will now become the entire team’s responsibility. This will greatly aid the organization in their overall compliance efforts. I recommend having a company wide benefit for staying in compliance and meeting your company’s goals. It could be as simple as a pizza party with prizes. This can easily be implemented with a number of days in compliance strategy. This will allow you to track when you...

The Business of Cannabis – Overviewing Software For The Cannabis Executive (Part 1 of 2)

For the Cannabis industry, it cannot be business as usual. To grow and thrive you have to be innovative and move with the market trends. Most importantly you have to keep your information safe. Finding innovative end to end solutions that you can use long term will be crucial. Year over year the Cannabis industry has grown leaps and bounds. It went from an estimated $1.5 billion in 2013 to $2.7 billion in 2015, with the projected revenue of the whole industry hitting $35 billion by 2020. Carving out your niche, streamlining your processes, and staying compliant in this dynamic industry is the only way to keep your business thriving. Introduction The booming Cannabis industry is similar to the western frontier in the 1800’s when Cowboys found gold. However now it is not gold everyone is after but a space in the market and legalization in every state which is affectionately called “The Green Rush” which began in 2012. The legalization of marijuana, twenty two States and Canada, and growing, gives way to a whole new economy and opens doors for entrepreneurs, Venture Capitalists, and Big Business. This new economy will not only fill the pockets of many business owners but will create jobs in places that would have been otherwise forgotten. To date, there is no perfect model on how Cannabis businesses will navigate these uncharted territories of regulation, optimization, and reporting. If entrepreneurs are planning to enter this business with the old brick and mortar mindset, they are preparing themselves for failure. Implementing effective business strategies and marketing requires complete, real-time information for all levels of your...

Cannabis Compliance: Getting You Through the Weeds (Part 2 of 3)

Missed Part One?   With all the different government agencies, you can imagine the task of keeping all your regulatory data straight will be daunting especially as you apply it to your cannabis operations. So great organization will be critical to your success in staying compliant. You must know the laws to be able to apply the laws. So as you find the applicable laws, statutes and governing regulations be sure to add them to your lexicon. Agencies Should Be Helpful in Cannabis Compliance The one saving grace here is that the agencies know you are doing this for the first time, as they are too in many cases. This agency will be more than happy to assist in answering any questions you may have. So do not hesitate to ask for assistance or clarification whenever you need it. Additionally, if you are doing your best and are active in working with these agencies they are more willing to work with you to resolve any issues that may come up. Issues will come up, this is guaranteed, the best thing to do is recognize them early and take the appropriate steps to cure them as soon as possible. As long as you do this the States will work with you to fix any issues. Now if you have made it this far then you have figured out the zoning issues and have your site in mind. You have identified your potential product mix and how you are going to make it. You have your growing methodology and are ready to start growing, right? WRONG! Many of the states...

Cannabis Compliance: Getting You Through the Weeds. (Part 1 of 3)

A lot goes into staying up-to-date when it comes to regulatory compliance within the cannabis industry. You will put in countless hours reading documents and doing your best to understand what all the legal jargon means. There are numerous requirements that may or may not apply to your business structure. The truth of the matter is you will do your best but at some point in time, you will find yourself out of cannabis compliance with one rule or another. The best thing one can do is to be diligent and relentless when it comes to keeping current with the rules and procedures governing the industry. You may be asking, well, where do I start? First, get a compliance book. No joke, go out and buy a large three ring binder, highlighters, sharpies, and dividers because you are going to need them. Make this book your “Compliance Lexicon”. As the Compliance Manager, you are not going to want to continually be looking the same things up so it is nice to have everything in one place. Plus, you can divide the sections for easy reference and make valuable notes in the margins of your lexicon. It will also make it easy to add any updates to the laws, statutes or rules as they change or are created. So, you have a binder now, what goes in it? Depending on your state, every state with a legal cannabis program, be it medical or recreational, will have an initiative, measure, and/or house bill that has been passed allowing the State’s cannabis program to exist. These documents will become the basis of...

Georgia governor signs expansion of who can legally possess CBD oil

ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal approved an expansion of the state’s medical marijuana program on Tuesday, allowing people being treated for six additional medical conditions to possess cannabis oil. The new qualifying conditions include autism, AIDS, Tourette’s syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease. Patients must register with the state to be eligible and have a doctor’s permission. Many of the additions restrict use to patients who are in severe or end-stage condition. The new law also allows people in a hospice program, regardless of diagnosis, to legally possess the oil that’s low in THC, the chemical responsible for the marijuana high.
